Comp 2000: Gaming the World

Comp 2000: Gaming the WorldAfter the solid success of Elvis: That's the Way It Is, and with his career as a movie actor having reached a standstill, Elvis Presley undertook a second concert documentary. Elvis on Tour trails after the King on a few concert dates in 1972, as he powers through a curious set list that downplays the classic hits in favor of the likes of "Polk Salad Annie" and "Proud Mary." Rehearsal footage, preshow jitters, and after-hours sessions singing gospel with the gang are included; most revealing is a sequence that follows Elvis off stage and into his waiting limo, where he towels off in exhaustion, cracks a few jokes, and listens to the praise of the entourage. These glimpses are a logical counterpoint to the concert material; less explicable is the rundown of Elvis's early years, which hardly fits the subject at hand--and frankly reminds us that Elvis looks pale and just a bit puffy at this moment in his life. The fun stuff includes a workout on the still-new "Burning Love" (Elvis has to read from a lyric sheet), committed takes on "Bridge over Troubled Water" and "I Got a Woman," and a spirited "Never Been to Spain," a song that fits Elvis's taste for simple, dramatic builds. That, and Elvis giving a stage introduction to "the guy that gives me my water and my scarves and so forth." The movie's structure feels a little random, not that that will matter to fans. At times it catches the King looking undeniably weary of it all, except in those moments when a song really catches him (certainly during the gospel moments) and you see just how utterly "in the music" he was. The split-screen approach is intact, and the film's "montage supervisor" was a young fellow named Martin Scorsese. Note about this 2010 edition: The original song that played under the opening credits, a cover of "Johnny B. Goode," has been replaced (apparently due to rights issues) with a live "Don't Be Cruel." --Robert Horton

Gaming in Washington DC - Not Just for the President and Congress Anymore

So, you like to play all sorts of video, computer, and online games with your friends. Well then, perhaps you belong to a couple of online gaming communities too. Sure, it's exciting and fun, and in Washington DC they want to recruit you to play online, perhaps even play for a little money too, and if you think you are too old for such things, think again, because the games they are talking about are geared towards serious adults.

In fact, there was a great article recently in the Wall Street Journal by the great writer Alexandra Berzon titled "Nation's Capital Bets Online Poker is Lawful - Washington, D.C.'s Budget Lets Lottery Operate Gambling Website in Challenge to Federal Government's Effective Ban" which was published on April 8, 2011. Apparently, the city council voted approval for the Government's Lottery website to offer online gaming and poker gambling to help shore up the budget, which is rather interesting because currently it is illegal to gamble online in the United States.

Indeed, all this kind of reminds me a little of that silly bumper sticker, the one that reads "Don't Steal, the Government Hates Competition" - and although I am not quite that cynical, I am fascinated by the predicament that this approval has put the Federal Government in. In the above mentioned article the poker players alliance stated that it wouldn't be a viable business anyway, as the pool of poker players around DC is only about 600,000 people, but it could help the budget.

If I were a betting man, well, I'd bet Steve Wynn in Las Vegas is happy to hear about this, as he's just invested in a major online poker website and has been lobbying heavy to get the Nevada Gaming Commission to allow the online gambling in Nevada. It's hard to say if other jurisdictions and lottery commissions will also try such a thing, perhaps budget ridden California might attempt to do the same thing to shore up its budget, as Jerry Brown has now come to town, and he has sworn he will slash the budget and he's not clowning around.

Looks as if Washington DC is all in, and others will soon follow. What was once considered illegal may soon be a way to drive revenue to the poorly funded government coffers at both the state and federal level, and who knows maybe some counties and cities, or perishes might also get in on the action? Time will tell, but if I were a betting man, that's where I'd lay my cards. Please consider all this and think on it.

Gaming in 3D Is Nothing Short of Amazing

Technology today is ever changing, fast evolving and perennially growing. From the days of PlayStation 1 (PS1) to PS 3 today gaming has come a long way.

Imagine sitting with your console swaying from side to side as your partner's car is winning the race and you just have to take a very difficult turn without crashing it. Now, imagine being in that car and guiding it through that turn even as the adrenaline pumps through your body. That's the beauty of games 3D style.

Ask any avid gamer today what is the latest fantastic, mind blowing, absolute must game that one must try and you will not hear about anything less than a 3D game. And why should that not be. After all what can be nicer than to be putting on glasses and reaching a land full of dinosaurs that you need to ward off, or planes that you sit in and fly or even a baseball game that you are part of. Ready to hit that home run the bat in position and as the ball pitches, every bone in your body is taken over by the sportsman in you as you hit that dream shot and win. Yes, while the very concept of games is living out your fantasy, games 3D style has just taken that to a new level of reality. Surreal has suddenly found a new resurgence in usage for how else do you explain the experience.

So, go ahead invest in a good console, there are so many to choose from nowadays. And then get ready for some amazing experiences. A word of caution to the new initiatees into this foray called 3D gaming. It can absorb, consume and completely exhaust you. Actually come to think of it anyone trying to convince your dad into buying you the console can use this as the perfect reason why you should get it. "Dad, it's not like I will be sitting on the couch and gaming all day. I'll actually need to be a part of it. My joints will ache, my heart will beat faster, my legs will ache with all the running. It's going to be good exercise dad. And you can join me too for a game of tennis." Well your dad, you'll know best how to convince him, this is just a pointer. It may help. So get up, get it and start gaming in 3D with style.

Diablo 3 Ponders A PC Console Gaming Port

As could be anticipated, the interview retained the minimum degree of hype the game needs to be able to both not be ignored about, and likewise not be so expected that our gamer brains burst as though we just experienced the plot of Groundhog's Day on Christmas Eve. Plenty of intriguing items were pointed out, yet mostly about how they perceived Diablo was going to become more Diablo-y as well as awesome-r. Just what really captured my attention was something which was glossed over at the conclusion of the article.

AG: What are the chances we'll actually see Diablo III on consoles in the near future?

KM: We're definitely looking into it. We're seriously considering it. I would say that the whole system specs thing is one of the cool things about Blizzard. You're always hearing in interviews with us about the death of the PC gaming.

This is interesting to us since, for one, we were just going over the possible "Death of the PC" just the other week. Yet, two, since it's been awhile since we have experienced Blizzard port a game over into a gaming console, and now they're contemplating it.

The implications of this working with Battle.Net makes it appear to be it would be somewhat hard, particularly if they do not intend to get into games consoles as a staple product. Nonetheless, if they too feel the decline of PC gaming, Diablo would be a superb game title, and maybe their last franchise title, to use to take Battle.Net into the gaming console sector.

As a quick aside, Blizzard has not really experienced the pangs that many developers most likely may with the whole "drop of the PC" deal. This would be because, for me, they did the intelligent thing and developed video games for both of the leading operating systems available, instead of a mass of other developers.

What numerous individuals might be disregarding in all of this is that Blizzard in fact unveiled console video games before Warcraft ever took them to a new level of developer. The game titles were rather well done and successful to boot. Lost Vikings and Rock and Roll Racing come to mind.

As a developer, Blizzard generally only releases games of high quality, despite the amount of time and money put into it. Starcraft: Ghost, an FPS type game, was never released for this exact reason. I'm personally anticipating seeing the way they integrate Battle.Net into the console experience.

Gaming, Innovating, Imitating, and Cloning Considered

Sometimes it seems that many video games, although they have different graphics, tend to have the same feel as you play. There is a very good reason for this, and perhaps, it comes from the human ability to imitate, and copy - it's innate, but does that make it okay? Ah, do I hear more controversy in the gaming community? Surely, I jest. Some rather innovative gaming programmers are miffed as others nix their creative abilities and copy their games. How bad is it, whom does it hurt, and why are such open-source advocates now angry at the borrowing of gaming themes and styles of play?

Indeed there was terrific article not too long ago in the Los Angeles Times titled "Game Developers Fight a Cloning War - Some Creators Feel Cheated By Alleged Idea Theft, But Others Think Cloning Can Be Good for Gaming" by Jamin Brophy-Warren, which was published on April 18, 2011. The article discusses the challenges of proprietary themes and concepts in video, internet, and computer gaming along with the proverbial quote; "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" motif.

Question is; when does outright copying of a computer game idea violate patent laws, or proprietary source? Further, I ask; is it illegal, in poor taste, or just unethical to make such copies, and when genres are copied in the movies, books, literature, and computer games who wins, and who really loses?

If there is a market for games of certain genres, styles, and scenarios then surely gaming programmers will come to the gamer's, and consumer's rescue right? I mean if there is money out there and folks desire certain types of games, you can bet gaming entrepreneurs will fulfill those wants and needs - that's how it works in the market place and the gaming sector and computer game industry is surely no different.

Consider if you will the counter argument to the gaming programmers who get pissed-off that others are basically copying their ideas, and merely changing the graphics. What If - no one was allowed to copy a given genre in literature, novels, or movies? There would be only one Western Movie, one Romance Novel, one Science Fiction Novel with aliens, etc. Would that really be fair to the public, who wants to be entertained with money in hand?

And to that point of contention, what about the Movie "Tron" and its central theme, namely; "power to users" - would the industry really be served if no other companies copied the standard genres or the future sub-genres? After all, people loved the movie Matrix, and that entire branch of Sci Fi mixed with philosophy. Many computer games are now based on similar themes, so they too copied a Movie Genre. Now the computer gamer programmers are angry that folks are copying their style, or various version of play, should they be?

After all the more others copy them, the more gamers buy games in that genre or using those styles, which makes it that much more powerful and therefore, more money for those who produce new games, and more sales for the old ones too, longer shelf life of active sales. See that point? I knew you would.

The Gaming Classroom: The Overly-Hyped Educational Video Game - Part 1 of 3

Video games, video games, video games. Everyone plays video games. On the TV, on the computer, on the iPhone, iPad, and basically any device that has a screen. I see it everywhere. In New York City where I live, I see adults playing video games on their phones in the subway going to and from work. You can't text or make phone calls down in the subway, so you might as well play video games to pass the time. Or so that's the way it appears to me.

We are creating a species of the human race that have learned to spend most of its leisure time, and time in between other more important responsibilities, to playing games. What about a conversation with your neighbor, or paying attention to your surroundings, or "collecting" your thoughts? These simple aspects of life have been replaced with a new past time called gaming.

Gaming is so ubiquitous that it has already entered the education system as a technique for learning and improving student's test scores.

Gaming In The Classroom

It's not new that video games have entered the education system. But the tide has certainly turned and is beginning an uncontrollable flood into our classrooms. Children are growing up in a supposedly high tech classroom in which they are going to be increasingly more and more surrounded by games. It seems like it's the only thing that grabs their attention these days, so the education system has decided to go with the flow and bring gaming into the classroom.

One gaming system in particular, DimensionU Educational Game Suite, created by Tabulus Digita, has made enormous strides in entering the education system and has achieved some attractive results. Or so it seems...

This article will be a 3-part series discussing the results of three different studies done using the DimensionU game suite on students K-12.

Study #1: Increased Test Scores And A Play On Words A University of Central Florida study found that students who played the games demonstrated greater gain scores from pre-test to post-test (mean increase of 8.07) than students who did not play the game (mean increase of 3.74);

Wait, Not So Fast!

Certainly, I support any technology that can help students achieve higher test scores. The United States is so far behind in Math, Reading, and Science that even a small improvement is welcome.

But, I'm not satisfied with the results of the studies found above.

Let's read into the studies more deeply. First, the University of Central Florida study used the word "mean" to describe the "average" increase in test scores. Though statisticians debate that there is a huge difference between the meaning of the two words, I will replace "mean" with "average" to make my points more clearly. By using the word "mean" in this study infers that the calculation was made by the total sum of all test scores divided by the number of tests taken. We're basically talking about the average test scores of all the students. It's Division 101. So, the average test score increased by 8.07% for the students who played the educational video games compared to a 3.74% average increase in test scores for the students that did not play any games.

Let's put this into more practical terms. If we assume that students had an average test score of 75 out of 100, then the students who played the games increased to an average score of 81 compared to a 78 for the students that didn't play games. Not bad but not great either. The truth is that most of the students had very below average grades in Math before the study even began. So in my opinion, at best the results took a "very low" student in Math and raised him/her to just a "low" student in Math. Still below-average. I would have liked to have seen the study done on students who already achieved passing grades in Math to take part in this study.

Why Video Games Are Not The Answer
Are we really going to put our faith in the future education of our children in video games? That study was done over two 9-week periods. And what the results don't tell you unless you read the full report is that a majority of the students had extremely low grades in Math. 64% were considered "very low" in mathematical skills prior to the study. Only 4% were considered high. That means an 8% increase in math scores would still have kept these students in the "low" part of the skills category.

Teaching Laziness In The Classroom

I support any technique that increases Math scores. Certainly, these below-average students need as much help as they can get. What I fear, is that they will only learn "how to learn" with video games. I don't want video games to become a replacement to other forms of learning that are effective but necessarily in vogue. Plus, technology has already proven to make us lazy. Do we want to teach laziness in the classroom too?

How has mankind expanded knowledge through the millennia? From learning math fundamentals through a video game system? Let's not forget how we all arrived to this point in history. It was because some really smart people contributed ideas to society that we now get to enjoy in this modern civilization that we habitat. These "smart people" weren't born with intelligence, they developed it through work and study.

Where Are The Hard Facts To Backup Gaming In School?

I will also mention that it has been difficult to get hard numerical data for the benefits of gaming on test scores in Math, Reading, and Science. We are still in its infancy. Let's move forward carefully, skeptically, and deliberately. We want to remain mindful that the well-being of future generations is at stake here.

There's Another Solution That Few Want To Pay Attention To

We're searching for solutions in technology for all of our problems including our education system. Well, there is a solution that has been in existence for thousands of years and its benefits can easily be traced as far back as the Renaissance Period.

The solution is to learn a musical instrument. Learning how to read and play music does not break down math and reading into separate video games to learn each subject or task one and a time. Learning music stimulates both left and right hemispheres of the brain at the same time, which accelerates the building of mathematical and linguistic intelligences. I've been reading about how video games improve multi-tasking skills which is great, but, music has been doing this for hundreds of years. It just doesn't have the "sexy" appeal of newer, more technological ways.

In Part 2 of this article, I will discuss in more detail the second study of DimensionU on students' test scores, and also begin to compare the results of studying music on test scores, using hard facts and numerical data to make a clearer comparison.

Gaming Desktop Configuration

Gaming desktops are top-of-the-line computers configured to run the all the modern games the gaming world has to offer. They don't come cheap, if you're wondering, nor are they eco-friendly when it comes to power consumption, but they are the best desktops when it comes to gaming, and they will display every pixel in crystal clear detail when needed. In order to have a good gaming desktop configuration, you'll have to have a basic grasp over some of the specifications such a machine should carry. You'll also have to set up a budget when trying to configure such a machine, or upgrade your current specs.

The Central Processing Unit

Gaming desktops need a powerful processor in their configuration in order to keep up with the ever-increasing requirements modern games have. Without a good CPU, you won't be able to even start-up such a game, not to mention run it. Your focus here is somewhere in the quad-core range. These can be a bit pricey, but they're a well worth investment in your future as a gamer, since they won't grow obsolete for years to come. Try to allocate at least 35% of your budget to this spec, since it's very important both for gaming and for other daily tasks you might run into.

You might also want to take note of the current socket your computer has for the processor, and explore upgrade options for that particular socket. But if you want a complete system upgrade, you'll also have to get a new motherboard to support the newer processor types that come out.

The System Memory

A decent amount of RAM will run a decent game. A higher amount of system memory will be a lot better for your gaming needs, since most games today require at least 2GB of RAM to run properly. If you really want to get the best performance out of your gaming desktop, your configuration for this spec should be in the 4-8GB RAM range. Luckily, RAM is an easily upgradeable spec, since most motherboards will carry around 4 sockets. If all the sockets are occupied on your system, you should look for RAM modules with a larger amount of system memory available.

The Visuals

The graphics card is the most important spec when figuring out the configuration of your gaming desktop. This is the element that brings true visual bliss to the gaming experience, so the joy factor will suffer if you neglect this aspect. There are tons of cards out there, but only a few which you can truly call the best. Since the best cards come at quite a big price tag, don't overdo it when purchasing a video card for your system. You should wait for a while since the prices on these things tend to go on a downward slope quite quickly, and you could get the same card at half the price in a matter of months, or weeks even in some cases.

Try to find a balance for these three important specifications when configuring your gaming desktop. Also, never spend all your budget on one of them, since the system will be unbalanced and data bottlenecks can occur.

Find out more about these specs and other, along with some great pre-built suggestions at the Gaming Desktops page I have created.

Augmented Reality Gaming in Zero Gravity - Fun at An Orbiting Space Hotel

Augmented Reality living room home gaming is all the rage with systems like Wii Technologies and Kinect Gaming, but have you ever considered how difficult such games might be to play in zero-gravity, or how fun it might be to try? Consider if you will the opportunities and applications available to a gamer in a space colony, whether orbiting in a space station, space hotel, or stationed on the moon or mars? Surely, you realize that this future is coming, and that it will not be long now.

For instance, there are many space enterprises being developed by the private sector right now. There are expanding space hotels being configured, and they will be up and launched within the next 5 to 10 years. Within the next 30 years there will surely be a lunar colony, and people on Mars. What will they do for entertainment? In many regards they will live in an enclosed any encapsulated environment. Sports as we know them on Earth will not be possible, at least not at first due to the sizes of soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and hockey rinks - but that doesn't mean they can't play in Augmented and Virtual Reality.

Perhaps the player might be tethered as they play a video game, and they can let their feet leave the ground and feel as if they are flying, while they watch the video screen. If there are flat-panel displays all around them which were part of the room, they might feel the sensation and rush of speed from a base jump, without actually going anywhere. They might even experience horizontal B.A.S.E. Jumping by pushing off of the sidewall, while tethered to a bungee cord like system. The screen in front of them would be one of the ground getting larger, and larger very quickly as they got closer to the screen.

Are you beginning to see the possibilities? The best part about it is that all this technology already exists, they only have to be implemented. Humans already have all these entertaining gaming situations and technologies, and they exist right now within the real world. Throw in a little zero gravity, and you're ready to have a good old time. And that perhaps will be the future of augmented reality gaming in a low gravity or even a zero gravity environment. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it. If you have any comments, questions, and/or concerns please feel free to shoot me an e-mail.

Is Gaming On The Rise? It Is The Number One Use Of Tablets

Okay so, what do you use your tablet for these days? Well, most of us know it is quite versatile and can be used for just about anything. Still, a good number of the first adopters are using it for a portable gaming platform. And it turns out it works great for that and it works so well in fact, that even non-gamers are getting into the action. Does this mean that gaming may get a big boost in future sales for many of those standout titles and signature games? Yes, I believe it does, and it will be a big boost for online gaming sites as well.

Now then, before you dismiss my argument here, I am not alone in making it. In fact, recently one of the more influential Slashdot posters "SoulSkill" posted an excellent summary titled Gamining Is the Most Popular Use For Tablets," (April 8, 2011) and he cited several sources including "The Guardian's Games Blog Reports" and a survey from Google's Admob for March 2011.

Yep, everyone is watching this trend. One interesting statistic quoted was that; "84% of tablet owners play games, ahead of even searching for information (78%), emailing (74%) and reading the news (61%). 56% of tablet owners use social networking services on their device, while 51% consume music and/or videos, and 46% read ebooks." And; "The survey found that 38% of respondents spend more than two hours a day using their tablets, while another 30% spend 1-2 hours."

So, is the world of online gaming finally going to break into mainstream and go on the road? I believe so, and just the other day I met a young man playing a game on his iPad at Starbucks and having a good old time. After about 15-minutes his friends showed up for a little school work study session, so he got his gaming fix between his waiting time there. Soon we will see folks playing at Dentists and Doctors Offices, at bus stops, and on their lunch breaks at the office - even professional adults, and you thought gaming was only for teenagers - think again!

Turns out that computer game sales are on the rise once again due to the recovering recession and the return of the consumer to retail, after a considerable hiatus. Retail sales for the first quarter have seen strong results and good corporate earnings which has also boosted game sales. 2011 looks to be a decent year in this sector and the Tablet portability makes it that much better. Please consider all this and think on it.

Gaming Desktops Under $1000 - General Guidelines

It seems that nowadays people become more and more focused on the budget they're willing to spend when purchasing anything. So if you're one of these people, you know that once you've established a budget for the product you intend to purchase, all you have to do is filter out from the vast choices available until you get to that perfect-priced product.

It goes the same way when you're a gaming fan and you're on the lookout for a new gaming desktop.

When purchasing a gaming desktop under $1000 you'll have to jot down some basic specs the machine should carry. It all boils down to how well your gaming rig can run Game X or Game Y. If you want to get a desktop that can play a certain game, you just have to make a search for that particular games system requirements and you'll get the basic idea of what sort of desktop you'll need to have.

Since many games have displayed two types of requirements, it's important to understand that sometimes you'll have to settle for less if the budget won't allow you more flexibility.

The Minimum System Requirements

This is the minimum your computer needs to have to run that particular game. You can probably get away with a bit less, but your image quality or frame rates will have to suffer. The minimum system requirements are a great guideline since most gaming desktops under $1000, some of them even under $700 fall right under this category. They all have a decent processor, a decent amount of RAM and a decent video card. It's a decent desktop which you can call your very own gaming desktop.

With the minimum system requirements as a guideline, you're sure to get the minimum specs required to run that particular game you obsess about. It's not a guarantee that you'll be able to run other modern games. If you do want to get a machine that's both low cost and can run more games, a good idea is to get the minimum system requirements of many more games that are in the market today.

For example, if Game X requires at least 1GB of RAM to play and Game Y requires at least 2GB to run, then it would be a wise choice to get the 2GB of RAM on your system to make sure you're able to play both games. Generally, try to compile a list of all the games you'd like to play, along with their minimum system requirements and get the largest value for each spec down on a list. Then simply search for a desktop which satisfies the list and you're done.

The Recommended System Requirements

This is what the game developer recommends that a desktop should be carrying that the game itself will run flawlessly on high settings without any loss in frame rate. This should be your aim when trying to get the best gaming desktop for you. This will also ensure that you'll be able to play other games in the same spec range with maximum details and would be a great investment for your future gaming endeavors.

The same rule applies as above, but this time you should get the recommended system requirements from that same list of games you want to play. Simply run through the list and select the largest value for each spec and you'll get an uber-gaming beast.

For prebuilt desktop choices visit the Best Gaming under 1000$ and find the perfect computer for your budget.

For true gaming bliss, make sure you stop by the Best Gaming Desktops page which explores each spec into further detail.

Simulating Inertia and Massive Unadulterated Acceleration for Our Gaming Future Considered

Have you ever watched a science fiction show where the spacecraft goes from its normal speed into hyper-drive or on Star Trek when the Enterprise went to Warp Factor 10? Indeed, it shows stars and planets which become almost like a blur as the spaceship moves forward, leaving space time at a standstill. In many regards this is simulating inertia and a massive unadulterated acceleration sensation using motion video to get the proper visuals.

Indeed, these concepts are used often in gaming, and if you've ever played a game where you are driving a racecar, the video makes the track which is near you in fine detail, and the faster you go the side areas are blurry. But, most of these simulations are not all that good, and when you play these games you don't really get this sensation of speed that you get when you're actually driving in a real car, racing a motorcycle, or flying an aircraft. But there's no reason we can't do better than this, there is no reason we can't get that sensation to appear to be so real that you can't tell the difference.

Now I suppose those that have not had the experience of moving fast, or accelerating at a very fast pace, may not know the difference, and they may even say I don't know what I'm talking about, some of the games are very real. Yes, some are, but I would still submit to you that they are not good enough yet, and we can do a lot better. Even the aviation simulators which train airline pilots and such do not really do a good job of simulating inertia, massive acceleration, or up close and personal speed.

One way to simulate inertia or acceleration might be to use a gaming chair which is slightly tilted to make the player feel as if they are being pushed back into their seat, just as they would with accelerating in a car. Some aviation simulators use a similar tactic. If we want our games to appear to be real, and get the gamer to suspend their belief system, and allow their mind to actually enter the game, then we need to do more with the visual effects, and also this sensation of the body as the player is playing the game.

Not long ago, I was having such a conversation at our think tank with someone who is an expert gamer, indeed she agreed with me, and we've come up with a few ideas. However, if you think you have solutions to this problem, I'd ask you to please consider all this and think on it. And then, shoot me an e-mail at your own personal convenience.

China Overtaking US Gaming Market

For several years, the United States has been the dominant force in the gaming industry, a truly lucrative market earning billions of dollars in profits each year. In 2009 total video game revenues reached $77 billion, rivaling that of Hollywood with global revenues reaching $85 billion during the same period. But with current trends in the gaming market, the US will eventually relinquish its hold of the top spot to China by the year 2014 according to new research conducted by industry expert Digi-Capital.

The main growth area in the gaming market has shifted from the console or personal computer based options and is strongly moving towards online and mobile platforms. This is attributed to the explosive popularity of smartphones as well as other mobile devices. This includes internet-ready gadgets like tablets which users find more convenient to use than traditional consoles. China, whose gaming market is focused online, is now on the road to dominate the global market

The Rise of Social and Mobile Games

The report from Digi-Capital predicts the gaming console market to stagnate is growth and revenues in the coming years and will eventually be replaced by online games and social networks. The popularity of online games in social networks has been tremendous. Video game developers such as Zynga are earning billions in revenues from integrated ads and the micro-currency systems which was very effective in making more people play more games by charging very small amounts for game play and other accessories.

Mobile and online games are expected to grow with an 18% CAGR, earning revenues of up to $44 billion or 50% of the total $87 billion that the video games market is expected to reach. Online and mobile game developing companies in the US and Japan are acquiring additional investments to further this growth, a sharp contrast to the stagnated growth of gaming console publishers which require millions of units in sales just to break even.

China Gearing Up to Be Top Gaming Market

Chinese companies are always looking for two types of investments. One is investing in foreign companies which they will use as business platforms so that they can leverage their domestic strength and achieve international growth. Another type is investing in foreign technologies and intellectual properties which they in turn will leverage to dominate the enormous Chinese domestic market. This trend is what's happening now in the gaming market.

The Chinese games market is currently at 12% of the world's total as of today but is expected to take on 50% of total revenues by the year 2014 with its current growth rate. This will be in contrast with the US share during this same period which is expected to decrease from 26% to 22%. China is now powering up with huge influx of capital investments with companies such as Tencent moving beyond the local sphere and grabbing a major hold in the US video game market with the recent acquisition of Riot Games.

Tencent is already peaking at 20 million online users at the same time - a figure bigger than the population of many countries - and is expecting these numbers to grow in the coming periods. Aside from Tencent, other Chinese companies such as ChanYou.com, Giant, NetEase and Shanda are experiencing billion-dollar growths - all of which are expanding rapidly and growing beyond the confines of their home markets.

The Pros and Cons of Gaming

Are you amongst those people who love playing video games more than anything? More than being in school? Or playing basketball with your friends? Or hanging out with friends? The truth is that everyone loves games whether you are old or young; there is no age limit in whether you can play a particular game or not, right? Gaming has become a source of entertainment for everyone including adults. Let's talk about the pros and cons of gaming, how gaming is beneficial in certain situations and not so much in some.

The Pros of Gaming:

1) Great source of entertainment and Good stress reliever: Mostly all groups of ages are vulnerable to stress; whether it's from working long hours, being in school all day, or encountering stressful situations at home. The most effective way to avoid stress is to stay away from stressful situations and embrace positive views in life. And this can be done by doing what you enjoy to do. If playing games is what makes you happy, then it's worth playing video or online games for awhile to ease your stress.

2) Fine socializing gadget: With modern day technologies, what made gaming even more popular now is the fact that people can play games with other random people online. Moreover, by playing with random people and communicating with them allows making new friends and a means of socializing with other people who tend to have the same interest which makes playing a game even more fun. So, in a way gaming is a teenagers or anyone's friend because it entertains there young brains as long as they are playing good games.

The Cons of Gaming:

1) Bridging apart from Real World: some people are so involved in the world of gaming that they can't see through pass that. They lose interest in outdoor activities; lag behind in school as they don't find education and doing homework as much fun as playing video games; like being in home all day to play their games.

2) Damage to Eyesight and increased risk of Obesity: As much amusing and enjoyable gaming is doesn't it make oneself a couch potato? When people love gaming so much and find it so pleasurable they tend to lag behind on other important things. Their life is just limited to that one room in which they can just sit and play games all day, and that's what comforts them and makes them happy. This can become a long term health issue as if you stay home all day in a couch playing games you tend to eat lot of junk food and in lot more quantity compared to going out and playing ball with friends which takes up some energy. Moreover, by sitting all day and being not involved any physical work can also extend the risk of obesity. Furthermore, let's not forget starring at the computer screen or TV for a long period of time playing games is very damaging to eyes and can weaken eyesight in long term.

The bottom line is that everyone should enjoy doing what they love; in this case playing games, but also be proactive and take care of your own health. Play games but for a short period of time and get more involved in outdoor activities and focus on your education as well.

Gaming Rapidly Becoming Integrated Into the Human Mind and Body - The Future is Here

Most folks that have been gamers for a long time remember the good old days using console games, cartridge games, computer games, and now online gaming. And every step of the way the technology has increased and gotten better. I doubt there are many people who would disagree with me when I tell them that in the future there will be no gaming control devices, and that the participants and gamers will use their mind and body to control their avatar within the game.

Better yet much of it will be augmented reality mixed with Virtual Reality. The lines between what is real and what is the game will be blurred. The future gaming experience will be much like the human life experience, and it would be wise not to mix them up for those who are playing for hours on end. If you are a doubter of what I'm saying, then I'd like to enlighten you as to this future, and where I see things going.

There was an interesting article recently in LiveScience Online News titled; Microsoft Sees Human Body as an Antenna" written by Leslie Meredith, TechNewsDaily Senior Writer. The piece showed up on Yahoo News on May 21, 2011. The article stated;

"Microsoft has discovered a home automation system that could eliminate costly rewiring and outsmart even the smartest appliances and the team has shown that the human body is a natural antenna. It reliably picks up the electromagnetic signals that emanate from all electrical systems and appliances in the home. These ambient signals can be used to create an affordable home automation system that controls household electronics with a pat on the wall or even a simple hand gesture."

Yes, now you can see that this reality is happening before your eyes. All of these technologies will be here the next 5 to 10 years. And that's less time between today and the first original games of the past. After all, electronic games have been around for almost 30 years now. And they're getting better and better each year.

Not only are the games getting better but also the simulators which are used by the military, aviation industry, and the training of people operating heavy equipment, trucks, ships, and just about anything that's quite expensive to operate.

Your body is the antenna, your mind is the controller, and you have the wheel. I hope you make the most of it and enjoy your time in virtual reality gaming of the future. Please consider all this and think on it.

Apple iPad Wireless Gaming for HDTV - A Class Above

The world is transforming everyday and new inventions are being made every minute. In order to keep pace with the world one has to remain vigilant at all times. The industry that has seen the most development in the recent past is the computer industry. In the last decade that has passed the computer industry has progressed by leaps and bounds. The pace of the advancement too has been amazing. The race for technological supremacy has driven the computer manufacturers to keep upgrading their machines. First the Pentiums ruled the world. Then the Laptop PCs and the note books were developed which took the world by storm and now is the time for the tablet PCs to become the desire of every computer user.

The tablet PCs are hand held computing devices that come with touch screens. These machines can be taken anywhere with ease and have redefined the word portability. The best tablet PCs that have been developed so far have come from Apple. The iPad which was the first installment of Apple became a hit with the computer users. The iPad 2 which has recently been launched by Apple has even beaten the sales record of the original iPad. The reason for this is that the iPad 2 has many amazing new features which make it better than the rest.

The most attractive feature of the iPad 2 is that it supports the wireless display mirroring through AirPlay. This allows the user to mirror the display that he is seeing on his iPad on the HDTV. The wireless feature is the most important one because it eliminates the limitations caused by wiring. The user can mirror his iPad screen on the HDTV without having to connect the iPad and the HDTV through a Digital TV adapter. This makes the gaming experience on the iPad 2 a treat. The iPad now has the capability to rival the gaming consoles because now the iPad can also be used as a gaming console. The wireless capability of the iPad 2 is going to increase the comfort level of gaming for the gamers because now they do not have to have wire connections to connect their TV and their devices.

Some companies have even come up with games that are going to be perfect for the wireless gaming from the iPad on the HDTV. The Fire-mint Company has come up with Real Racing 2 HD for the iPad which is going to be the first such game for the iPad which allows the user to use their iPad as a gaming console and the game is going to be mirrored from the iPad on to the TV screen. Many more games are in the pipeline and are soon going to be available for the users. The only shortcoming of the wireless gaming in iPad 2 is that it works best only if you have an Apple TV. The normal TV sets are not going to be interfaced with the iPad. This added expenditure is the only hurdle that might prohibit the users from enjoying the wireless gaming experience of the iPad on HDTV.
